Job description

The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and building systems. This role involves troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, system upgrades, and emergency repairs to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the resort. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced, luxury hospitality environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

System Maintenance & Repairs:
Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on all mechanical and electrical systems, including
HVAC, plumbing, electrical circuits, lighting, water treatment systems, and fire safety systems.
Diagnose and troubleshoot system faults or malfunctions and perform necessary repairs to minimize downtime.
Ensure that all systems, equipment, and machinery are in good working order, including back-up generators, air-conditioning units, water pumps, and electrical panels.
Perform preventive maintenance tasks, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing parts on equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Building Infrastructure & Equipment:
Maintain and repair building infrastructure, including doors, windows, walls, ceilings, floors, and other structural elements.
Install and maintain equipment, machinery, and fixtures used in daily resort operations.
Oversee the maintenance of pools, spas, and other water-based systems, ensuring proper operation and water quality.

Health & Safety Compliance:
Adhere to all local health, safety, and environmental regulations and ensure compliance with all relevant building codes, electrical codes, and safety standards.
Conduct safety checks and audits for electrical, fire, and mechanical systems, identifying and addressing potential hazards.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and repairs to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Emergency Repairs & Troubleshooting:
Provide immediate support for emergency repairs in case of equipment failure, power outages, or system malfunctions.
Quickly diagnose problems and ensure quick and efficient resolutions to avoid service disruptions.
Technical Support & Collaboration:
Work closely with other departments, such as housekeeping, F&B, and front office, to ensure all systems are functioning optimally to support day-to-day operations.
Provide technical advice and support to team members and management on system upgrades, repairs, and equipment performance.
Collaborate with the Facilities Manager and Maintenance Supervisor to ensure all maintenance activities are aligned with the property’s operational goals.

Inventory & Equipment Management:
Manage and maintain inventory of tools, spare parts, and materials required for maintenance tasks.
Ensure the efficient use of maintenance supplies, ordering materials as needed and maintaining stock levels.
Recommend the purchase of new equipment or replacements when necessary and within budgetary guidelines.

Record Keeping & Reporting:
Keep detailed records of maintenance work performed, repairs completed, and any system replacements.
Prepare a property walk check
Provide weekly and monthly maintenance reports to the Facilities Manager, highlighting completed tasks, ongoing issues, and upcoming maintenance needs.
Ensure that maintenance logs and safety checklists are up-to-date and accurately reflect all work performed.

Sustainability Initiatives:
Contribute to the implementation of energy-saving initiatives and environmentally friendly practices, including the efficient use of electricity, water, and other resources.
Identify opportunities for system upgrades or improvements that reduce operational costs and environmental impact.

Other Responsibilities:
Participate in the training and development of new maintenance staff or apprentices.
Assist with the preparation of budgets for the maintenance department and contribute ideas for cost reduction without compromising service quality.
Perform any other maintenance-related tasks as assigned by the Facilities Manager or Maintenance Supervisor.

Education & Training 

Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
A degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field is preferred.

Certifications:
Relevant certifications, such as a Certified Maintenance Engineer or a Licensed Electrical Technician, would be advantageous.
Additional certifications in HVAC, plumbing, or pool maintenance are beneficial.

Training:
On-the-job training will be provided to familiarize the candidate with specific systems and equipment.
Ongoing technical training to ensure the latest industry best practices, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols are followed.

Knowledge & Experience

Experience:
At least 3-5 years of experience in a maintenance engineering role, preferably in a luxury hospitality or resort environment.
Hands-on experience with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems is required.
Experience in managing complex building systems, troubleshooting, and performing repairs on a variety of equipment.

Knowledge:
Strong knowledge of electrical systems, mechanical equipment, and building maintenance.
Familiarity with building codes, health and safety regulations, and environmental standards.
Knowledge of water treatment systems, including pool and spa systems, is an advantage.

Skills & Abilities  

Technical Proficiency:
Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Ability to use a variety of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and machinery to perform repairs and maintenance.

Problem-Solving:
Ability to identify problems quickly and find effective solutions to minimize downtime and maintain smooth operations.

Attention to Detail:
Strong attention to detail to ensure maintenance is carried out to the highest standards and to prevent recurrence of problems.

Time Management:
Ability to prioritize tasks, handle multiple assignments, and work efficiently, especially under time-sensitive or emergency situations.

Communication Skills:
Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively report on issues, provide instructions, and collaborate with team members and management.

Teamwork:
Ability to work collaboratively within a team and also work independently with minimal supervision.

Customer Service Orientation:
A proactive and service-oriented approach to ensuring the property’s infrastructure supports an exceptional guest experience.
